I'll be flying again soon and find myself packing for a journey yet again. I've discovered over the years and different adventures that the more you travel, the less you need. But today, airports and flights are constantly full of business drones, pensioners and spoiled little millennial techno bros, and there are loads of packing tips, tricks, photos, top-tens and posts all over the interwebs, instagrams, imgurs and facebooks. So, one might wander, what is the point of my writing about my own thoughts on packing.
Well... the point is quite simple really. Although people travel a lot today, maybe more than ever, and write a lot about it all, you don't even need to look at the internets to realize that most of them have gotten it completely wrong. I've rambled in the past about over cumbered travelers carrying entirely too much junk with them in what somehow passes for 'carry-on' and holding up the lines at security checks with their inability to follow simple directions, and that is very much still true. If any of the social media influencers had figured out efficient ways to travel and influenced their followers I would have nothing to write about today. Yet here I am.
When it comes to wardrobe, on just about any sort of trip, I only ever needed three of everything. More may be nice to have on some trips, but three is more than enough to survive comfortably for a week, month or even longer. That means, wear one set and pack two. Toiletries are easy - toothbrush; but you can also buy one for next to nothing anywhere you go. I usually carry one of my own, a shaver, and a first aid kit because I tend to be prone to scratches, cuts and bruises. Soap and toothpaste I usually source locally. Then come the gadgets and toys. And again, it turns out that we can get away without needing too much of anything. Most of the time, all I really need is a phone, charger and headphones. It's nice to have a laptop, camera, ebook, power packs, portable monitor, solar charger, wireless mouse, etc.. so I do usually bring a toy or two, but not the entire arsenal. On my last pleasure trip, I brought a laptop and two GoPros. And that was nearly a two month long adventure. Depending on the kind of trip, you may need a sleeping bag, tent or portable stove, but you definitely don't need to carry a 52 inch TV strapped to your luggage. Once I've picked out all the things I need to carry, pick a bag to shove it all into, and I'm ready. That's it.
Now, off to apply my genius and get myself packed for the next adventure.
