Writing Challenge - entry 9

I've heard it said that you should learn to idolize your future self. There are a number of derivatives of this saying and all of them are totally wasted on me. We can never possibly know what any future may hold for us and even if we did, I'd want no part in that knowing. What's the point? Isn't it much better to look up to history and learn from its experiences as well as our own and then shape our minds, bodies and spirits today for today? A much better saying stroking my neurons right now is "Historia est magistra vitae"; Cicero FTW.

One of my first idols was Garfield. He hated mondays, loved lasagna and had life all figured out. Pretty good gig, right? Later, I took stand against most of Garfield's views, but lasagna is always a good idea. I also idolized my godfather for similar dedication to idling and profound laziness. And he built 5 sailboats while I had my nose burried in scientific textbooks. Him, however, I mostly idolized for his uncanny ability to know what to do with lemons once life gave him lemons and for always making it seem like that was exactly what he wanted to be doing. Another idling chamlion I have been very fond of is Oscar Wilde. His wit has always been a great inspiration and fantastic teacher. When life gave him lemons, he'd sometimes throw them at people, same as a few other writers I idolized. Another genius that I idolized is Tesla. I even went so far to try to build gadgets to be able to get into his state of mind. He was nearly always poor but well dressed, white gloves and all, (another "fuck you, universe") and that always amused me. The one historical figure that I idolized the longest is, without a second thought, that genuis Italian bastard, Da Vinci. He married gods of arts and science and told us that these are the only things worth living for. Next to the idlers, these brilliant genuises had remarkable dedication to holding onto their belief systems. There have also been many antagonists that I have crossed swords with that have served well as idols. Each and every one of those villains had some remarkable characteristic that I idolized about them. And a good thing should be accepted or learned from even if it does come from an unsavory source.

Together, the immovable titans of history and wicked jesters of time were my idols. Next to them, idolizing some future variation of me being on track to a carefully choreographed future while missing out on the obviousness of the truth of reality seems kind of dull and mostly pointless.
