Writing Challenge - entry 13

When I was twelve or thirteen, Mensa sent me to attend a training seminar on mnemonics, meditation and mind mapping. I was already very much enjoying doodling and sketching all sorts of word art (graffiti) and mind mapping made a lot of sense to me. The training was a whole lot of good fun, but at the time I didn't take many notes and I couldn't find practical application of the technique. Tried as I could, I haven't managed to implement marriage of note taking and art in my daily life. Occasionally,  I would revisit the idea but without much success.

It wasn't until I got into university that I began to see some application of drawing my notes. My university education involved a lot of numbers, codes, graphs, diagrams and formulae. More importantly, it involved a lot of unenthusiastic lecturers and professors and general absence of writing a lot of text, all of which encouraged me to turn my focus to taking good and colorful notes.

As I got into the work force, I found even more reasons and opportunities to use word art and mind mapping in my professional and personal life. I used this to craft and organize many aspects of my life and I very much enjoyed doodling this way. The one way I enjoyed doodling even more was creating semi-technical diagrams as drawings. For example, I created the system architecture diagram for my digital life assistant on my desk, right in front of me, so that I could reference it and double-check details as I was working on it. I also created bonsai irrigation plan which I later implemented that included soil temperature and moisture measurements, artificial lighting specifications, water pump and flow components and all other details relevant to growing my plants.

Sketch notes and mind mapping are truly an excellent form of note taking and thought organization that is also a lot of fun. Or perhaps, they are completely useless and I am just finding ways to enjoy and cherish something I've invested quite a lot of time and practice into.
